Clean Gold at Home!

Gold is yellow, bright and lustrous. But having said that I am sure that you all know that it is quite common for the metal to lose its lustre and dullness takes over. This mainly happens because most of this metal that we use is in the form of jewelry that is worn by us. Our jewelry is exposed to dust, pollutants, sweat, make-up, etc. and it also brushes against the skin constantly. Particles from these pollutants deposit on the gold making it look old and dull. The best way to keep this yellow metal looking new and bright is to clean it regularly.

Now how do you clean it at home? It is pretty easy and I would like to share my experiences with you. I have been practicing this at home for quite a few years now and  now I am almost a pro! I have listed out some tools and techniques that can be used to clean jewelry made of this yellow metal.

  1. Cleaning brushes: These brushes are useful in cleaning any type of jewelry. If you don’t have one, you can invest in one or else even a tooth brush with soft bristles or an eye brow brush will work well.
  2. Make a solution of water and a mild detergent and soak your gold in it for fifteen to twenty minutes. After they have soaked for a while, remove and rinse with tepid water.
  3. Toothpaste is another way to clean this metal. Cover your jewelry with a non-gel toothpaste and lightly scrub with a tooth brush or brush to remove dirt or grime. Rinse lightly with water to remove remains of toothpaste and pat dry with a soft wash cloth.
  4. You can buy jewelry cleaning solutions from jewelry stores. You can use this in addition to cleaning your jewelry. This will restore the shine to your old.
  5. You can use a jewelry cloth to polish your jewelry. These are easily available in jewelry stores. You can clean and scrub your jewelry the normal way and then polish them with this cloth to get back the shine.
  6. How you store your jewelry is also very important. Make sure that you keep jewelry in soft cloth pouches that are available in jewelry stores. Keeping them in cloth pouches will keep dust, grime, etc. away from your jewelry.
